A stylish and versatile New Zealand native, Pittosporum tenuifolium, commonly known as Black Matipo, is a top choice for modern gardens, shelter planting, and hedging. With its small, wavy-edged grey-green leaves on striking dark purplish-black stems, this evergreen shrub or small tree adds texture and contrast year-round.
Naturally compact and upright in form, Black Matipo is ideal for tidy hedges, privacy screens, or as a specimen plant. It clips well and responds positively to shaping, making it a favourite in both formal and informal garden designs.
In late spring, it produces small, dark purple, honey-scented flowers, subtle to the eye but attractive to bees. Hardy and easy-care, it thrives in a range of conditions including coastal areas, dry sites, and frost-prone gardens.
